Vivi on Lovesick3

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010 by mb

By Vivi Andrijani

http://www.MakeuphairV2.com

I am a professional hair stylist and makeup artist who recently had the good fortune to work on Lovesick3, a runway fashion show in San Francisco created by Alexandria von Brömssen (http://www.vonbromssendesigns.com). A number of designers, makeup artists, hair stylists, still and video photographers took part.

Alexandria von Brömssen showcased 40 beautiful, sexy and edgy items of ready to wear and lingerie from her namesake collection, and created a mesmerizing theatrical performance in collaboration with Bad Unkl Sista (http://www.badunklsista.com) that I must describe: a woman with her face painted white wearing a long white gown with a long train slowly walked to the end of the runway, holding a cage that contained a fake bird (symbolic of a woman’s egg). The woman saw a man (who was actually a woman, also with a white painted face) in the crowd. He approached her and gave his whiskey (symbolic of a man’s sperm) to her in exchange for the bird in the cage. Supposedly, the woman became pregnant and gave birth. To my surprise, the woman — while standing at ease — lifted her gown up and three women with white painted faces wearing pale pinkish clothing came out! They joined the audience sprinkled metallic papers in the air. Meanwhile, a group of three people in dreadlocks sang and played banjo melancholically in the background…. It was quite a performance, to say the least.

Another notable designer was Gelareh Designs (http://www.gelareh.us). I did hair and makeup for three of the Gelareh models using vibrant colors such as sky blue, orange, gold, bronze with pale silver pink and red gold lipstick. My vision was inspired by Venetian masquerade makeup looks and hair styling like that in the movie “Sweeney Todd”.

In collaboration with Head Piece Designer, Caley Johnson (http://www.missgigglemonster.com), Gelareh (“Gia”) Alam showcased her couture designs, which in my opinion were elegant, dramatic, sensual, and intriguing. Words like renaissance and gothic came to mind, as well as science fiction fantasies. A San Francisco Art Institute graduate, Gia has proven her unique style in the apparel and fashion industry, though she is also a painter and sculptor. She said that many of her clothing designs are inspired from her paintings and sculptures. She often uses draping techniques and hand-stitches, and incorporates unique elements such as robes, gold, metal and leather. When I asked her about current projects, she mentioned that she is in the middle of designing virtual world clothes for a Bay Area based game company. Now, how cool is that?

Oscar’s Red Carpet Style 2010

Sunday, March 14th, 2010 by Cori

Anna Kendrick
Cameron Diaz
Demi Moore
Zoe Saldana
Sarah Jessica Parker
Kate Winslet

Penelope Cruz

Red Carpet moments are all about celebrating and looking fabulous for very special events.  When it comes to amazing red carpet watching, nothing compares to the Oscars.

While I cannot always remember who won Best Animated Film, I cannot forget the amazing gowns worn on the Red Carpet — or by whom they were worn. This year was no exception; we saw gorgeous, shimmering golds on Cameron Diaz (Oscar de la Renta), Sandra Bullock (Marchesa), and Kate Winslet (YSL), that epitomized elegance. Alluring neutral hues, such as blush, buff, and peach radiated, especially on Demi Moore (Versace). Anna Kendrik looked ethereal in Elie Saab. Shades of blue, lilac, and red were abundant and memorable on  Penelope Cruz in Donna Karan’s cranberry gown and Queen Latifah in a Badgley Mischka lilac number.

What would the Oscars be without a few gowns that made daring style statements? Whether you liked them or not, Zoe Saldana’s Givenchy gown, Sarah Jessica Parker’s Chanel, and Jennifer Lopez’s Armani Prive epitomized red carpet glamour.

I may not always remember the films, but the memories of the dresses are something on which I can always rely.

Alexander McQueen Gone at 40

Thursday, February 11th, 2010 by mb
Drew Barrymore in Alexander McQueen
Alexander McQueen

Sad news in the world of fashion today:  Alexander McQueen was found dead at his home in London, it appears he took his own life.

Born in London 1969, his desire to design started early — he grew up making dresses for his three sisters.  Before the age of 20, Mikhail Gorbachev and Prince Charles were among his clients.  In 1996 he was appointed as head designer at Givenchy, and had earned a reputation as l’enfant terrible for his shock tactics and controversial behavior. As just one example, while at Givenchy, he once sent a model who was a double amputee down the runway with intricately carved wooden legs.

McQueen’s clothing was adored by many.  May he rest in peace.  Find out more on the Huffington Post.

Fresh Start

Monday, January 25th, 2010 by Cori

Alessandra Ambrosio in Balmain

2010: A fresh start, clean slate, renewed optimism and clarity on the past. As we reflect on what went right in 2009 and how things could be different this year, it’s fun (and perhaps more lighthearted …), to think in terms of fashion. Let’s take a look at styles we embraced and loved last year, as well as those we will happily leave behind.

2009 Trends that hit:

Heavy Metal

Everything from shoes to handbags took on a hard edge. Accessories were bold and embellished with razor-sharp details such as zippers, grommets, and everything in between. Somehow it worked, but I’m definitely looking forward to a softer look in spring 2010.

Bold Boots

Whether you opted for the over-the-knee, the more demure ankle boot, or the “shootie” (term for the shoe and boot hybrid), last year there were plenty of choices and a myriad of styles to choose.

80’s Excess

Think Balmain. The look was definitely a hit with the young Hollywood and fashion-forward set. Those of us who wore it the first time around were better off treading lightly. Instead of going for all-out glitz, we added touches of sequins and shimmer in smaller doses; but there was no denying that flash-and-dash had not been seen and embraced in such large doses since the days of Dynasty.

Blue Crush

In 2009 when we finally figured out how to wear the skinny jean to compliment our figures, out of nowhere came the “boyfriend.” Well, these boyfriends are definitely comfortable and cute, but are they here for the long term? Who knows, let’s enjoy them while they last. We also saw jeans in new hues, and suddenly grey as well as black jeans became part of the regular rotation.

Wise Investments

Over-the-top was not considered a smart investment in 2009.  We found ways to maintain our fashion standards while making intelligent financial decisions. We wanted value and quality, and though there were trends, for the most part it was the classics that grounded us and remained our staples. Luxurious and cozy cashmeres, buttery leathers, sparkling jewels and sumptuous Louboutins abounded, but we thought a little longer and a lot harder when deciding what was worth the splurge. It was a like a badge of honor to pull out a classic handbag that could hold its own against any trend or fad of the season.

2009 Trends also worth mentioning: leggings, animal prints, clutch bags, statement necklaces, cocktail rings, leather, blazers, shoes with a “gladiator” influence, Ray Ban Wayfarers, aviator sunglasses, faux-fur vests, straw fedoras, slouchy wool-beanies and scarves (worn no matter the temperature).

What did you love and loathe, and what you are embracing for 2010? Here’s to a stylish and fabulous 2010! Looking forward to hearing from you.

The After Party

Thursday, December 31st, 2009 by Cori

As much as we love the holiday season, all the cheering and partying can leave one feeling more flat than fabulous, not to mention what that kind of life can do to your skin. Suddenly – ugh! – you could be carrying extra bags under your eyes.  Lack of sleep and dehydration are a recipe for dull skin and puffy eyes.  Well, I say bah humbug to the Grinch who steals your glow!

My recommendations for keeping skin looking gorgeous and fresh — before and after the party – in 10 minutes:

Collyre Bleu Laiter Eye Drops
Benefit's Eye Brite
Jennifer Aniston's Fresh Look
Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer
Bliss Triple Oxygen Mask

Creme de la Mer
Gisele Bundchen
Stila's Gerbera
Stila's Glow

First, splash your face with ice-cold water several times, and, while you’re at it have a huge glass for yourself.  Follow up with a quick, mini eye-treatment mask.  I swear by the Triple Oxygen Energizing Mask from Bliss Spa; it’s perfect for rehydrating and reducing puffiness.  Not only does the mask feel amazing and cool on the eyes, but it also works wonders at helping you look like you got a full eight hours of beauty sleep – even if you have not. Also, if you find the whites of your eyes looking a little dull or red, use a blue-colored eye drop; I like Collyre Bleu Laiter-Blue Eye Drops.

Next step: prep the skin by applying an extra-hydrating moisturizer like Creme de La Mer or Chanel Ultra Correction Lift; both are wonderful and extra-hydrating. Now your skin will feel fresh and dewy, and you are ready for some barely-there makeup that will have you looking fabulous and radiant in just a few minutes.

Instead of a heavy foundation, tired skin will benefit from a tinted moisturizer. Apply just enough to even-out your skin tone. Laura Mercier’s tinted moisturizer seems to be on everyone’s must-have list, and it lives up to the hype. Add a little brightness to the eye area with a light-reflecting product such as Dior’s Skin Flash or Benefit’s Eye Brite; both are great for eliminating darkness. You can also use a touch of the Eye Brite directly under your brow bone to give your eyes an extra wide-awake look. As for eyeliner, try either an espresso color for a soft and natural look, or, for more definition, a deep midnight blue, which will bring out the whites of your eyes.  Bobbi Brown eyeliner gel in cobalt is the perfect shade. Avoid black with tired eyes; it’s much too harsh.

More options for the eyes:  for a clean and simple look, line the inside rim of your eyes with a nude pencil (not white — it’s too artificial looking). Makeup Forever has the right nude pencil, which they call a nude concealer and lip liner pencil.  Makeup artists swear by it and use it as eyeliner; it can make eyes look wide open. If you choose to wear an eye shadow, use just enough for a little definition such as Stila’s Glow, which has three colors in one (use the lightest, shimmery color for the corners of your eyelids). To finish off your bright-eyed look, add a bit of mascara — Dior Show or Loreal Voluminous always does the trick for beautiful, glossy lashes.

Cheeks and lips:  dab on a bit of crème blush, such as Stila’s Gerbera or Tarte’s Natural Cheek Stain in Flush for some radiance. Last but not least, go with a pinkish, nude, or berry-colored lipgloss or balm, like Bobbi Brown Rose Sugar or Benefit’s Benetint lip balm for a natural and healthy look.

So there you have it – naturally gorgeous with minimal effort – an easy guide to looking amazing after a late night! Happy New Year!
