San Francisco's night of opulence 2009, the opera's opening gala, began with cocktails followed by Verdi's Il Trovatore, dinner and dancing at City Hall. San Francisco Opera Guild celebrated its 70th year with the Opera Ball chaired by Teresa Medearis and Adrianna Pope Sullivan. Bravo! Club, San Francisco Opera's group of young professionals dedicated to building a new audience for the opera, also hosted guests at City Hall, which was decorated in Spanish splendor by Stanlee Gatti. Bill Hopkins Rock'n Orchestra kept the party going under the rotunda until well after midnight.

Opening night, held on September 11, 2009, marked the beginning of a new era for the San Francisco Opera, with internationally acclaimed Italian conductor Nicola Luisotti as music director. Thankfully, Mrs. Wilsey continued her 25 years of support as, among other things, the grand sponsor of the opening weekend. Mrs. Wilsey ensured the production of Il Trovatore, graced the opera house with flowers and brought the art of opera to Golden Gate Park for a free concert. Opera in the Park took place at Sharon Meadow on September 13.
