Watching the show at La Barca

RedCarpetSF, the online fashion magazine, recently launched a television show called Red Carpet Bay Area on KRON4. This brand-new show airs bi-weekly on Saturdays in the prime 7:30 pm time slot as the Northern California lead-in to Entertainment Tonight. Red Carpet Bay Area’s first show broadcast on March 13, 2010 and I was honored to be among just a handful of guests invited to watch it with Marybeth La Motte, the executive producer and show host, at La Barca in San Francisco.

Among the first things I noticed about Marybeth were her enchanting smile and her pleasant personality. She gave such a warm welcome and introduced me to her guests and close friends. Among the guests were Margaret Mitchell, founder of EpiCenter MedSpa, one of the nation’s top medical spas; Charleston Pierce, a model and CEO of Charleston Pierce Presents who has worked with supermodels such as Tyra Banks and Cindy Crawford; Bilques Smith, an accomplished account executive for KRON4; Sarah Granger, founder and managing director of SF Bay Style, a popular online blog; Moanalani Jeffrey, socialite columnist for the San Francisco Examiner who is also a photographer; and Frank Alizaga Jr., a San Francisco native and senior vice president of sales at TickerMine Company.

I had a fabulous time meeting these people at the premiere, but of course, the highlight was watching the inaugural episode of Red Carpet Bay Area. The show was fresh, vibrant, upbeat, fashionable, and contemporary.  Everything from the quality of information, the presentation of the stories and superb video editing, to the attractive host with her engaging and beautiful smile, are factors that almost guarantee the show will excel. Red Carpet Bay Area combines elements from The View from the Bay and Entertainment Tonight, and will most certainly win viewers from a variety of age groups.

Photographer Jeffrey Hipona captured intimate moments from the premiere night. Marybeth La Motte could not stop smiling with joy and pride — very well deserved. So, cheers to you Marybeth! We wish you nothing but success and look forward to watching more on Red Carpet Bay Area!

Saturday, March 13, 2010 - Red Carpet Bay Area premiere:

Oscar’s Red Carpet Style 2010

Sunday, March 14th, 2010 by Cori

Anna Kendrick
Cameron Diaz
Demi Moore
Zoe Saldana
Sarah Jessica Parker
Kate Winslet

Penelope Cruz

Red Carpet moments are all about celebrating and looking fabulous for very special events.  When it comes to amazing red carpet watching, nothing compares to the Oscars.

While I cannot always remember who won Best Animated Film, I cannot forget the amazing gowns worn on the Red Carpet — or by whom they were worn. This year was no exception; we saw gorgeous, shimmering golds on Cameron Diaz (Oscar de la Renta), Sandra Bullock (Marchesa), and Kate Winslet (YSL), that epitomized elegance. Alluring neutral hues, such as blush, buff, and peach radiated, especially on Demi Moore (Versace). Anna Kendrik looked ethereal in Elie Saab. Shades of blue, lilac, and red were abundant and memorable on  Penelope Cruz in Donna Karan’s cranberry gown and Queen Latifah in a Badgley Mischka lilac number.

What would the Oscars be without a few gowns that made daring style statements? Whether you liked them or not, Zoe Saldana’s Givenchy gown, Sarah Jessica Parker’s Chanel, and Jennifer Lopez’s Armani Prive epitomized red carpet glamour.

I may not always remember the films, but the memories of the dresses are something on which I can always rely.

Fresh Start

Monday, January 25th, 2010 by Cori
Taylor Momsen
Rachel Zoe
Balmain
Alessandra Ambrosio in Balmain

2010: A fresh start, clean slate, renewed optimism and clarity on the past. As we reflect on what went right in 2009 and how things could be different this year, it’s fun (and perhaps more lighthearted …), to think in terms of fashion. Let’s take a look at styles we embraced and loved last year, as well as those we will happily leave behind.

2009 Trends that hit:

Heavy Metal

Everything from shoes to handbags took on a hard edge. Accessories were bold and embellished with razor-sharp details such as zippers, grommets, and everything in between. Somehow it worked, but I’m definitely looking forward to a softer look in spring 2010.

Bold Boots

Whether you opted for the over-the-knee, the more demure ankle boot, or the “shootie” (term for the shoe and boot hybrid), last year there were plenty of choices and a myriad of styles to choose.

80’s Excess

Think Balmain. The look was definitely a hit with the young Hollywood and fashion-forward set. Those of us who wore it the first time around were better off treading lightly. Instead of going for all-out glitz, we added touches of sequins and shimmer in smaller doses; but there was no denying that flash-and-dash had not been seen and embraced in such large doses since the days of Dynasty.

Blue Crush

In 2009 when we finally figured out how to wear the skinny jean to compliment our figures, out of nowhere came the “boyfriend.” Well, these boyfriends are definitely comfortable and cute, but are they here for the long term? Who knows, let’s enjoy them while they last. We also saw jeans in new hues, and suddenly grey as well as black jeans became part of the regular rotation.

Wise Investments

Over-the-top was not considered a smart investment in 2009.  We found ways to maintain our fashion standards while making intelligent financial decisions. We wanted value and quality, and though there were trends, for the most part it was the classics that grounded us and remained our staples. Luxurious and cozy cashmeres, buttery leathers, sparkling jewels and sumptuous Louboutins abounded, but we thought a little longer and a lot harder when deciding what was worth the splurge. It was a like a badge of honor to pull out a classic handbag that could hold its own against any trend or fad of the season.

2009 Trends also worth mentioning: leggings, animal prints, clutch bags, statement necklaces, cocktail rings, leather, blazers, shoes with a “gladiator” influence, Ray Ban Wayfarers, aviator sunglasses, faux-fur vests, straw fedoras, slouchy wool-beanies and scarves (worn no matter the temperature).

What did you love and loathe, and what you are embracing for 2010? Here’s to a stylish and fabulous 2010! Looking forward to hearing from you.

The After Party

Thursday, December 31st, 2009 by Cori

As much as we love the holiday season, all the cheering and partying can leave one feeling more flat than fabulous, not to mention what that kind of life can do to your skin. Suddenly – ugh! – you could be carrying extra bags under your eyes.  Lack of sleep and dehydration are a recipe for dull skin and puffy eyes.  Well, I say bah humbug to the Grinch who steals your glow!

My recommendations for keeping skin looking gorgeous and fresh — before and after the party – in 10 minutes:

Collyre Bleu Laiter Eye Drops
Benefit's Eye Brite
Jennifer Aniston's Fresh Look
Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer
Bliss Triple Oxygen Mask

Creme de la Mer
Gisele Bundchen
Stila's Gerbera
Stila's Glow

First, splash your face with ice-cold water several times, and, while you’re at it have a huge glass for yourself.  Follow up with a quick, mini eye-treatment mask.  I swear by the Triple Oxygen Energizing Mask from Bliss Spa; it’s perfect for rehydrating and reducing puffiness.  Not only does the mask feel amazing and cool on the eyes, but it also works wonders at helping you look like you got a full eight hours of beauty sleep – even if you have not. Also, if you find the whites of your eyes looking a little dull or red, use a blue-colored eye drop; I like Collyre Bleu Laiter-Blue Eye Drops.

Next step: prep the skin by applying an extra-hydrating moisturizer like Creme de La Mer or Chanel Ultra Correction Lift; both are wonderful and extra-hydrating. Now your skin will feel fresh and dewy, and you are ready for some barely-there makeup that will have you looking fabulous and radiant in just a few minutes.

Instead of a heavy foundation, tired skin will benefit from a tinted moisturizer. Apply just enough to even-out your skin tone. Laura Mercier’s tinted moisturizer seems to be on everyone’s must-have list, and it lives up to the hype. Add a little brightness to the eye area with a light-reflecting product such as Dior’s Skin Flash or Benefit’s Eye Brite; both are great for eliminating darkness. You can also use a touch of the Eye Brite directly under your brow bone to give your eyes an extra wide-awake look. As for eyeliner, try either an espresso color for a soft and natural look, or, for more definition, a deep midnight blue, which will bring out the whites of your eyes.  Bobbi Brown eyeliner gel in cobalt is the perfect shade. Avoid black with tired eyes; it’s much too harsh.

More options for the eyes:  for a clean and simple look, line the inside rim of your eyes with a nude pencil (not white — it’s too artificial looking). Makeup Forever has the right nude pencil, which they call a nude concealer and lip liner pencil.  Makeup artists swear by it and use it as eyeliner; it can make eyes look wide open. If you choose to wear an eye shadow, use just enough for a little definition such as Stila’s Glow, which has three colors in one (use the lightest, shimmery color for the corners of your eyelids). To finish off your bright-eyed look, add a bit of mascara — Dior Show or Loreal Voluminous always does the trick for beautiful, glossy lashes.

Cheeks and lips:  dab on a bit of crème blush, such as Stila’s Gerbera or Tarte’s Natural Cheek Stain in Flush for some radiance. Last but not least, go with a pinkish, nude, or berry-colored lipgloss or balm, like Bobbi Brown Rose Sugar or Benefit’s Benetint lip balm for a natural and healthy look.

So there you have it – naturally gorgeous with minimal effort – an easy guide to looking amazing after a late night! Happy New Year!

Party Guest Etiquette

Monday, December 14th, 2009 by Cori

Denise Hale

Dede Wilsey

Dede Wilsey

I had so many questions about party etiquette that I went directly to etiquette expert Lisa Grotts, for a guide to the whirlwind that is the holiday party season.

 Q.  If I have more than one holiday party on the same evening, should I tell the hostess beforehand, or should I just make a “graceful” exit?

R.  It depends on the type of party.  For a cocktail party you’re in the clear, you can arrive and stay anytime in between the given time.  If it is a sit down dinner, there is no way to make a graceful exit other than to decline the second invitation.

Q. If my significant other is all “partied out,” is it OK to bring one of my girlfriends instead?

R.  If it is a cocktail party given by a good friend, by all means.  If a small dinner party, it is likely best to decline and hit the town with your girlfriend instead.

Q.  Is “fashionably late” still considered fashionable?

R.  Better a few minutes late than early for a private cocktail party or dinner.  Often hosts are handling last-minute details and praying the doorbell does not ring on time.

Q.  If I’m attending a party in which I will only know the hostess, do you have any tips on mingling?

R.  Be well informed.  Read at least one daily newspaper, or Web news source, and a weekly news magazine.   Current events are perfect for small talk.  Don’t forget the sports and arts pages.

Be ready for a conversational lull.   Ask people about themselves.

Remember: party talk is anything but serious or long.  Leave your troubles at home.

Flight Plan

Thursday, November 19th, 2009 by Cori

Jet setting, globe trotting, or whatever term you prefer, travelling always gives me a feeling of excitement, as if I’m off to some exotic location. While most trips are worth the anticipation, the actual getting ready process often lacks luster, especially during the busy holiday season.   Going through security, removing shoes, jewels and belts, displaying your laptop, all at an Olympic-sprinter’s pace, can leave even the most style-savvy traveler feeling more frazzled than fabulous.  I can’t do anything about the lines or security procedures, but below are some tips I’ve picked up along the way; hopefully they will make your trip more enjoyable.

Carry-on
Scarf
Sue London
Oversized Sunglasses
Handbag
Sweater
Passport
The Multiple

The Three “C’s”:  Cashmere, Cotton, Comfort

Always wear something that looks as good as it feels. The key is dressing in layers so you can adjust to temperature changes while still looking stylish. Cotton and cashmere are the perfect fabrics to wear while traveling. Cashmere sweaters and quality cotton tees or tops paired with flattering pants or leggings will keep you comfy and cozy during the flight.

I never, ever leave home without a cashmere wrap or an oversized scarf. For longer flights I pack two (roll them up, they take up very little room), and use the second one as a headrest or pillow. I avoid the pillows on planes at all cost—yuck!  As for shoes, obviously the time of year determines what is appropriate, but Sue London makes a great ballet flat that literally rolls up in your bag.  They are perfect for in-flight and beyond.

In the Bag

I suggest putting whatever you will need for the first day or evening in your carry-on suitcase (the one that gets stored in the overhead compartment).  Ask yourself: if my luggage were lost, what would I need the first day or night to get me through until my bag arrives?

My other carry-on is an oversized handbag that fits under the seat in front of me, and is filled with my in-flight must-haves. In addition to the wallet, passport and travel itinerary, my essentials:

Electronic basics:  phone, computer, iPod, camera, and last but not least, I highly recommend Bose headphones.  I used to roll my eyes when I saw travelers pull them out, but now I know how amazing they are! Use them for music, movies, or to drown out noise. We’ve all sat next to the chatty passenger who decided to share a four hour version of their life story.  Headphones give you the option of chit chatting, or politely saying, “do not disturb” by putting them on. Trust me, these are the best $250 I’ve ever spent!

Important tip: get back-up chargers for your phone, computer, and other small electronics, and put them in a little bag that always stays in your carry-on; that way, you’re never scrambling at the last minute to find them, or forgetting to bring them along.

Makeup Essentials

When I fly, less truly is more when it comes to wearing makeup. No matter what, it’s a tough task to step off of a flight looking as fresh as when you arrived, but a few simple steps can help:

Pack makeup items with multiple uses. I love the Nars Makeup Palettes — they are sleek, slim, and can save the day in a pinch because they contain blush, eye shadows and several lip colors all in one. “The Multiple” by Nars is also great because it can be used on the eyes, lips and cheeks.

A Bobbi Bown foundation stick is also a must because you can apply only where you need it and as a concealer.  It is mess-free and quick, and since it’s not liquid there is no trouble at security.  Add mascara and brushes from the Sephora Beauty to Go Brush Set, and you’re all set.

Important tip: nothing is more important for your skin than water!  Drink lots of water.

Miscellaneous Must-Haves:

Oversized sunglasses, a hair-clip or barrette, hand-sanitizer or baby wipes (also great for in-flight spills and removing makeup), Advil, travel-size moisturizer, lip balm, toothbrush and toothpaste, Emergen-C packets (who knows if they work, but thinking they do comforts me), brush, eye mask, mints, every magazine I can carry, eye drops, mini lint-brush, and a pen– when I get bored I do the crossword in the in-flight magazine or I make a to-do list.

Important tip:  always keep any valuables, especially jewelry, in the carry-on that fits under the seat and stays with you. Never put them in the overhead compartment.

Now, sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight!

Other than San Francisco, do you have a favorite city?  New York City, my former home and source for much inspiration

From whose closet would you most like to shop?  Catherine Deneuve

 Marcy On the Town:

Favorite San Francisco spot to meet for cocktails?  BIX

Secret San Francisco indulgence?  Bittersweet on Fillmore Street for chocolate

Paul & Elizabeth Touw at the Emmy's

Paul & Elizabeth Touw at the Emmy's

Elizabeth’s Style:

Whose red carpet style do you admire?  Everyone seems to employ a stylist these days, which makes it hard to evaluate personal tastes, though Kate Moss comes across as cool, edgy, and eclectic.   On the other end of the style spectrum, whomever dresses Rania of Jordan , puts together some lovely looks.

What is your must-have new item for fall/winter? Outerwear that does not feature or include fur, for example, from Stella McCartney’s current collection, a fantastic and stylish motorcycle jacket made from synthetic fibers.

Top three beauty products? Sunblock, a low-stress lifestyle, and skincare products with good data to back up their efficacy claims.

Do you shop online? I almost exclusively shop online because I appreciate convenience, efficiency, and unique finds. Net-a-porter , L’Inde le Palais , luisaviaroma , shopbop , even eBay , are favorites.

Favorite San Francisco spot to meet for cocktails? Gary Danko

RedCarpetSF picked Elizabeth Touw among the top five most stylish women in San Francisco 2008.

Introducing RedCarpetSF’s Style Council: Kristi Dowler

Saturday, November 7th, 2009 by Cori

Kristi Dowler

Kristi Dowler

Kristi Dowler owns VyAyr Fitness, and is a regular contributor of fitness and nutrition tips to RedCarpetSF.  Daily doses of VyAyr’s boot camp at Crissy Field, Pilates, yoga and nutrition classes could keep anyone red carpet ready.

 Kristi on San Francisco Style:

San Francisco style – what do you love?  I love that San Francisco is diverse on every level, including fashion. It’s not uncommon to see a woman in a drop dead gorgeous outfit throw a Patagonia over it to stay warm in our constantly changing weather

What do you consider fashion “don’ts” in San Francisco? The over done, over made up look just doesn’t mix with our lighthearted and fun city

What is your favorite San Francisco event? Every day the sun shines

 Kristi’s Personal Style:

Whose red carpet style do you admire? Gwen Stefani and Pink

What is your number one must-have new item for fall/winter? A positive attitude, but I guess that’s not new!

Top three must have beauty products? A smile, lip-gloss, and a quick splash of Marc Jacobs’ Daisy or original fragrance

Do you have a favorite online shopping site? Planet Blue for super beachy ready-to-wear

Any workout tips? Keep it simple; if you enjoy it you are more likely to do it! Push ups, dips, squats, lunges and running – you can’t go wrong with a good mix of those classics
