Let’s Talk Leggings

Saturday, October 31st, 2009 by Cori

One of the biggest trends this fall has to be leggings — it seems every designer is doing them, and they are everywhere! In the past you may have passed on this trend as unflattering, too revealing, or only for certain body types. I suggest taking another look because the options are endless, new and creative.  Leggings are a stylish and comfortable alternative to skinny jeans and they are ideal if you need to transition quickly from a day to evening look.

A few things to keep in mind when wearing leggings:

Proportion is key - it’s almost always best to pair them with something slightly billowy up top (all tight is all wrong).

Layering is vital - add a blazer, lightweight sweater or a striking jacket and make sure that at least one of those pieces skims the hip, or falls slightly below.

Choose flattering fabrics - long gone are the days of the lightweight, show every curve cotton/Lycra legging. Thankfully, the leggings of today have been created using much more flattering fabrics.

In particular, I like the effortlessly chic look of uptown hi-gloss liquid leather leggings with to die-for-heels. Rag & Bone, LnA and David Lerner all make lust-worthy liquid and leather leggings. For a more casual day, try a ribbed riding legging, Vince makes a pair that look great with over-the-knee flat boots, a classic boot, or a Chanel-style ballerina flat.

Give leggings a second look — they are a bang-on trend and unbelievably comfortable. What else are you looking for?

Are We Ready for Red?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 by Cori

To me, red lips are sultry and sexy but they are not simple to pull off.  In the past I shied away from scarlet, though after seeing red on the fall runways for Dolce & Gabbana, Marc Jacobs and Giorgio Armani, I was inspired to figure out how to wear red lips with confidence.

Is there a red for everyone?  The first step to choosing the right red is to determine the best shade for your skin tone.  If your skin tends toward tan and warm in tone, look for an orangey red. For cooler skin tones choose a blue red. A universally flattering shade is a classic pillar-box red.

I’ve heard makeup artists suggest going with either a strong lip or strong eye, but, like most women, I like the best of both worlds.  I think a good option is to go for a minimal, clean-looking eye, but with dramatic black eyeliner and lots of lashes. Add flawless foundation and a shade of red lipstick, and go from basic to bombshell. I think I’m ready to give it a try – you?

Love this look!
Giorgio Armani
Kim Kardashian
Dolce & Gabbana

Behold the Power of Powder!

Thursday, October 8th, 2009 by Cori

Whether you want to extend a fabulous blow out, add volume to fine hair, touch up your roots, or if you are just tight on time, hair powder is a quick and easy way to streamline the glamour process.  Hair powder, a useful styling product that dates back to the 18th century, can revive and refresh precious locks and keep you on time for your next appointment.

Hair powder comes in two basic formulas:  spray and loose powder.  Both work for absorbing oil, adding volume and freshening.  A little goes a long way, so I recommend starting slow and building.  Hair powders come in a variety of colors, but personally, the color with which I’ve had the best luck is the original white. The consistency is fine and silky, and it leaves no powdery evidence as long as you work it through your hair with a bit of vigor! So go ahead and skip a shampoo once in awhile — I won’t tell!
