Valentino’s Romance & Elegance for Spring 2010

VALENTINO at Halle Freyssinet, 13th Arrondissement

The Valentino show was located more than thirty minutes away from the other Paris Fashion Week shows, in a rather unattractive, slightly industrial part of Paris.  In spite of this, the actual space – reminiscent of a warehouse in New York City’s meatpacking district – and Show that followed more than made up for any inconvenience in the journey.  Designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli sent the models down a wooden runway, while projecting charcoal gray and white visual art images that moved and morphed on the walls all around the tent.

The models were dressed in a gorgeously neutral and softly shaded palette of pale pink, nude, and dove gray.  Valentino’s signature bows and rosettes adorned skirts, jackets and dresses made of organza and leather.  I feared that some of the pieces were a bit too voluminous to be very wearable, and the Philip Treacy designed sky high stilettos adorned with upwards reaching wing-like appendages were too much (not something I say very often about shoes).  But, fans of Valentino’s handbags would surely be pleased with this latest collection of buttery leathers adorned with bows and rosettes.  My favorite piece was a fabulous pale pink organza top with a big swirly rosette across the front that tied diagonally across the back in a large bow.  I also really liked a series of several small mini black dresses.  On the whole, Valentino’s Spring 2010 was romantic and elegant.

Identifying Your Everyday IT Bag

Saturday, December 12th, 2009 by mb

Choosing a handbag for daily life is an important decision.  Which style — hobo, tote, satchel, clutch, messenger?  In which trend — metallic, leopard, red, black, with studs or without?  How does one decide?  Michelle Potthoff follows handbag fashions, and sells them at Neiman Marcus in San Francisco.

Michelle recommends two main ingredients for everyday handbags:  durability and lightness.  Make sure it is roomy enough for your daily things, and has compartments such as a handy place for your cell phone, or a zippered side pocket.  And ask yourself before making the final decision – does the look make me feel special?

Michelle’s “Special” handbags for everyday:

CHANEL's Classic Flap
CHANEL's Classic Flap
Valentino's Studded Petal Bag
Prada's Hobo

Prada’s Vitello Daino, hobo style in black, brown or red fits comfortably over the shoulder, is lightweight and large enough to hold everything from lunch to Louboutins.  If you have a lot of black in your wardrobe, consider it in red to add a pop of color.

For an everyday style with studs, hands-down my favorite is Valentino’s studded petal bag. The soft leather and feminine shape dresses up any outfit.

For a ladylike and timeless classic, you can’t go wrong with CHANEL’s classic flap “2.55″ style with a chain strap, it was designed by Coco Chanel In 1955.

Red Carpet Shoes, San Francisco

Monday, October 26th, 2009 by mb

Women’s shoes for formal events, in my opinion, should be peau de soie, and are extra lovely when trimmed with velvet or satin ribbons, or encrusted with rhinestones or glitter. Traditionally patent leather, while handsome and appropriate for men’s tuxedo shoes, is not apropos for shoes with formal evening gowns. Nowadays soft, metallic leather, as seen in evening shoe collections by Brian Atwood, Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent, is suitable for black tie.
